Be a Voice for the Voiceless

In Proverbs 31:8-9, God calls us to speak out for those who have no voice. Who needs our voice? To whom shall we speak? What shall we say? How can we put this Bible passage about justice into action?

Millions of Christians know Proverbs 3:5-6, where the Word of God tells us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, / and do not rely on your own insight. / In all your ways acknowledge him, / and he will make straight your paths” (NRSV). People memorize it, quote it, and share it with others.
Proverbs 31:8-9 is a Bible passage where God calls us to be an advocate for justice
In the same book of Proverbs, the Word of God tells us: “Speak out for those who cannot speak, / for the rights of all the destitute. / Speak out; judge righteously; / defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:8-9, NRSV). Most people have never heard of it. People don’t share it, and I’ve never heard of anyone memorizing it.
God has given us both directives to help us live the lives he has called us to.
In their February 2025 issue, St. Anthony Messenger published an article I wrote that explains how to put Proverbs 31:8-9 into action.
I encourage you to check out the article on the Franciscan Media website here:
The original version of the article, with links to a range of groups that can help you be an effective voice, is on my website here:
This article walks through how to put this passage of the Bible and others like it into action:
The article identifies some of the many places in the Bible where God calls us to seek justice, rescue the oppressed, and defend the rights of the needy.
It identifies specific groups of people in our society today who need us to speak out for them.
It identifies people to whom we can speak: those with special positions that give them power to act on God’s concern for the poor.
It shows us where we can turn to know the right things to say. We don’t have to be alone in being a voice for the voiceless. There are many nonprofit Groups That Work for Justice we can join with, that have the facts and can help us seek justice for the poor and defend the oppressed and needy.
Read God Calls Us to Speak Out to see how you can be a voice for those who have no voice.
